NYP Corp. has proudly served America’s nursery growers with quality burlap, twine, shade clothes, and wire baskets. Wire baskets are commonly used by many nurseries to support a tree’s root ball. The question that lingers in the minds of many people, however, is whether the basket should be removed when planting, or even whether it should be used at all. Does the basket present harm for the tree? Or would stakes be better to use?

Studies have shown that wire baskets do very little harm, if any, to the tree at all. The baskets are used for a specific purpose, and the benefits far outweigh any negativity that arises.

They are used to support the root ball of a tree, to keep it intact during the entire transportation and planting process. It also distributes the weight evenly and helps provide support for the tree while it becomes established in the ground. With a wire basket, the support is much more secure and stable than with stakes. The basket helps to hold the root ball in the ground until it becomes firmly rooted. To learn the correct way to plant a root ball tree, read our previous blog How to Plant a Burlapped Tree.

Attempts to remove the basket can result in damage to the tree’s root system. Additionally, stakes can present harm to the tree if they are not removed, as often is the case. Unseen stakes and guy wires can also become hazards for mowers or those who might trip on them.

Extensive research has been conducted to determine whether the wire basket presents any harm to the tree. The wire is spaced evenly enough that roots are able to reach through without being impeded. Over time, the roots grow around the wires on either side. It does not appear that the wires present any harm; water flow is not hindered, and roots are both sides receive the essential nutrients.

To ensure the full health of the tree, it is important to get the right basket, both in size and type. There are three main types to choose from. The original NYP basket offers quality manufacturing, featuring galvanized welding ring as well as loop baskets. The NYP/GW wire basket is manufactured right here in the US. Two continuous wires are used in the baskets construction to provide durability and structured support, but without raising costs. A BRAUN partnership with NYP supplies the third basket type with its patented continuous wire design.

Each separate type is available in a wide selection of sizes as well as styles so that there is sure to be a wire tree basket for any given tree. Contact NYP-Corp for locations of burlap manufacturing and distribution sites.

It is estimated by United States Federal agencies that 125 people die every year in flood conditions. While many people live in high risk areas, those who live in lower risk areas may also sustain damage from flood waters if the weather conditions are favorable for flooding.

Different Types of Floods

Rivers may flood when the water rises to high levels. The most common cause of river flooding is heavy rain or melting snow. Those living in coastal areas may also suffer damage from flooding when tropical storms or hurricanes cause high winds, which results in tidal surge.

In cold climates, flooding may be caused when snow begins to melt in the spring which is commonly referred to as spring thaw. Another common cause of springtime flooding, is ice jams. During the winter, large pieces of ice form on the surface of rivers, once the weather warms these pieces of ice begin to move and often become caught by tree limbs or rocks. When this happens, these pieces of ice form a dam which causes flooding upstream.

Summer storms can cause flash flooding, which can come on suddenly with little to no warning. When large amounts of rain fall within a short period of time, rivers reach their full capacity and quickly overflow resulting in rushing flood waters. Dams are placed in certain areas to keep water levels steady. If a dam becomes damaged from an earthquake or if a structural deformity is present, it can cause flooding. Dam failure causes large volumes of water to be released at once, sweeping everything in its path away and damaging homes.

Sandbags Used to Prevent Flood Damage

In order for this method to work, it must be done correctly. For best results, choose sandbags about 14 inches in width and 26 inches in length. Most emergency sandbags are made from woven polypropylene, which is a sturdy material. When filled, it is easiest to handle sandbags that weigh no more than 40 pounds each. Sandbags can be stacked to form a dike, which can prevent flood waters from entering residential areas. After the dike is formed, sheets of plastic placed at the dike bottom will help improve water tightness. In addition to using sandbags for flood protection, a sump pump can be helpful in removing any flood water that seeps through the dike.

Many people’s experiences with sandbags revolve around flood control. They certainly do the job better than just about anything else available. Because they can be transported empty and filled on site, they can quickly reach areas with little else available or where heavy equipment can’t.

When filled, one person can easily carry and place a sandbag. With an interlocking stacking pattern, (Read our previous blog on How to Correctly Create a Sandbag Wall) sandbags create an excellent barrier to water. For flood control, they can be used to repair levies, create a barrier around a house, or simply block water from entering under doorways.

But sandbags and emergency sandbags have so many more possible uses. After flood dangers have passed, people often have sandbags left over. Learn how to correctly dispose sandbags after flooding. The same properties that make them excellent for building barriers for flood control also make sandbags great for building a variety of other structures.

Garden Uses

Burlap bags can be used to make raised garden beds and for growing plants. Because of their flexibility and relatively small size, sandbags can create raised beds of almost any shape. All that’s left is to add dirt and start planting.

They can be also used for garden retaining walls. Using the same alternating, interlocking pattern as used for flood control can create a strong retaining wall. Just as with raised beds, sandbag retaining walls can take on almost any form desired. The wall becomes a design element along with serving a function. Sandbags can also be used in water logged areas and gardens with sensitive plants. They can be laid out as either steps or an entire footpath.

Empty sandbags can be used to carry garden supplies or the garden’s bounty. Their material allows for airflow, so trapped moisture won’t cause produce to rot. They alos work for carrying things outside of the garden.

Sandbag Buildings

The alternative, sustainable, and green building movements have grown a lot recently involves creating a sandbag structure. Offering strength, low cost, and minimal technology required makes them an ideal material for these sorts of buildings. For this purpose, the walls will require extra reinforcement. There are companies that use uncut sandbag tubes for building homes, utilizing arches, domes, and other strong structural design elements. Of course, professionals should be consulted to ensure building safety.

Other Uses

There are many more uses for sandbags. Filled sandbags can be used for extra weight in the back of a pickup for traction in snow and ice. Sandbags can be used for exercise. Weight is adjusted by the amount of fill or number of sandbags. The exercises are virtually limitless.

With a creative imagination and some manual labor, the possibilities for using sandbags are virtually limitless.

Established 93 years ago in St. Louis, Missouri, Great Western Bag processed burlap and burlap bags for feed mills, farmers and nurserymen across the Midwest. As demand grew from the emerging nursery industry; Great Western focused on the needs of nurserymen by providing a diverse and expanded line of growing and digging supplies.

In 1974 Great Western opened its second location in McMinnville, Tennessee operating as “Southwestern Nursery Supply”. In 1985, the McMinnville location introduced the patented “Superior” wire basket and commenced full scale basket production. The company further expanded its line of nursery products and changed its name to Great Western, for greater customer recognition between the Missouri and Tennessee locations.

During its years of growth, Great Western and NYP Corp maintained a close working relationship; supplying each other with quality products for Americas Nurserymen. The synergies between the businesses lead to the eventual acquisition of Great Western by NYP Corp in December 2010.

Operations in St. Louis and McMinnville will continue in their current locations, and will be managed by former Great Western employees. Check out our contact page for a complete map of all NYP locations.

This acquisition will offer new and existing customers of both companies an expanded product line and factory direct nursery burlap and wire baskets. And, as with all NYP operations, this welcomed addition will be operated with the same core values and principles that have made NYP the leader in factory direct wholesale nursery supplies. Check out www.gwestern.com where you can order online.

These are trees that have been dug out of the ground and their roots have been wrapped in burlap. Natural burlap will rot away after planting, causing no disturbance to the roots.

Spring-planting allows the roots enough time to become established before summer’s excessive heat. Furthermore, spring rains will keep the ground moist, reducing the immediate need for supplemental watering.

Trees wrapped in burlap have some advantages over container-grown trees. NYP Offers wire nursery baskets, that are ideal for easily transporting and handling delicate or sandy root balls. Trees wrapped in burlap are pruned at the time of transplanting. (Read our previous blog Wire Nursery Baskets)The roots have not become pot-bound. With container-grown trees, roots become restricted and circle inside the containers. It might be necessary to cut the roots for easy removal. The roots of burlap-wrapped trees do not require trimming, diminishing the risk of damage to the root system. Additional pruning is unnecessary once planted.

Planting a tree with burlapped roots is fairly straightforward:

Prepare the planting site by digging a hole slightly shallower than the height of the root ball, and three times its width.

Roughen the inside of the hole all around.

Cut away wrappings, labels and strings from the tree.

Prune away any broken/dead branches.

Carefully lower tree into hole, insuring that the area where the trunk flares sits just above ground.

Cut away and discard the top two-thirds of burlap from the root ball.

Refill the hole with the original soil, creating a raised ring around the tree for watering.

Mulch to within three inches of the tree trunk.

Water well to get rid of air pockets.

Keep trees well-watered during the first year after planting, especially during hot, dry conditions. The amount of water needed depends on the size of the tree and the climate, but a minimum of five gallons of water twice weekly is advisable.

It is important not to over-water, however. If a finger inserted into the soil detects moisture, then watering is not necessary at that time.

Trees provide beauty, shade and structure to the landscape, and they prevent soil erosion. The beauty of planting trees wrapped in burlap is that landscapers can plant mature trees that will have immediate impact in gardens, without homeowners having to wait for smaller trees to reach maturity.

NYP has proudly served gardeners, landscapers and nurserymen with high quality burlap for their agricultural and nursery supplies since the 1950′s.

The biggest enemy in a yard is weeds. These noxious plants grow prolifically and steal nutrients from grass, flowers, shrubs and other landscaping foliage. Weeds can be removed by uprooting them or spraying them with herbicides but neither method is a practical, long term solution. It may be impossible to pull up all weeds in a large yard and the chemicals in herbicides have been found to pollute groundwater.

A safer and more effective way to control weeds is the use of a barrier cloth. NYP Corp. ground cover fabric is referred by several names, (weed block, weed barrier) but it was designed with one purpose in mind; trap moisture in the soil and prevent weed growth. The cloth is constructed of synthetic materials that allow water and air to go through it while preventing the growth of weeds. The barrier works best when it is installed prior to planting but it can be utilized in an established yard, as well.

Weed barrier cloth is installed to cleared ground in a yard or garden space. It will work best at blocking weeds if it is placed as flat on the ground as possible. It can be secured using rocks, pegs or mulch. A knife can be used to cut openings for the landscaping plants. It is vital to make sure the openings are cut in the correct places as extra slits will make the barrier cloth less effective. When the planting is completed, all of the cloth should be covered with planting soil and topped off with mulch. Additional plants may be added later by moving the mulch and cutting a slit in the cloth, then planting as usual. This fabric is designed to withstand long periods of sunlight, resist damage from insects and wildlife, and allow water penetration.

When installed properly, a weed barrier cloth will provide an attractive yard for many years. It is a simple solution to a very common problem. All NYP ground cover comes with a woven green stripe marker every 12” for guidance during installation or for lining potted plants.

Greenhouse shade cloth, or clothes, performs exactly as the name implies. The material creates a shady environment over greenhouses, hoop houses or other designated areas. The varied sizes and weave patterns of the shade clothes enable the product’s use in virtually any type of gardening or outdoor environment.

While allowing air circulation, shade cloth generally blocks the harmful ultraviolet effects of the sun, which may reduce plant temperatures by up to 20 degrees. The cloth not only helps minimize greenhouse cooling costs, but also maintains soil moisture levels. During cooler months, shade cloth might also be used as frost protection, by maintaining internal temperatures. When used on a frame outdoors, the shade cloth also prevents plant damage by insects, birds and small mammals. Another form of protection can be done by using burlap. Read our previous blog Burlap Used to Protect Plant Life During Winter for helpful tips.

NYP Corp. knitted Poly Shade Cloth are seamless, thus eliminating weak points in large covers. The knitted process allows a slight stretching quality which eliminates wrinkles. The shade clothes are approximately 30% lighter than woven material, making handling easier and less weight on your structures. The looser the weave, the lower the density, which is generally defined as the percentage of sun each product blocks.

During the hot summer months, most herb and vegetable garden plants require 40 to 60 percent protection from the sun. Orchids and similar exotic plants require a higher percentage of protection, which may begin around 70 percent.

NYP-Corp offers individuals to purchase shade cloths in varied sizes and colors and also offers the thermal reflective Aluminet. Shade cloth widths begin around 10 feet and may exceed 40 feet and widths are available from 22% – 90%. Finished cloth typically has double reinforced edges and hinged lock-on grommets allow you to decide where you want your tie-down points. The strength and durability of the cloth generally varies depending on the type and density of the weave. NYP-Corp lock-stitched shade cloth remains intact after trimming to a desired size, no wrinkles during installation, and will not ravel or fray.

Gardeners typically install the lightweight shade cloth by draping the fabric over the roof and down along the sides of a greenhouse, hoop house or other frame structure. Stabilizing the cloth entails passing cording or rope through the grommets and staking the lines to the ground. Plastic snap fasteners might also be used to attach the cloth to a frame. Some gardeners drape the aluminum version of shade cloth over frames on the inside of greenhouses. Besides using shade cloth for gardening protection, homeowners might purchase burlap to create wind barriers for plant protection.

Jute matting is suitable for both residential and commercial uses, environmentally friendly and easy to install.

The process of erosion removes topsoil, either by rainwater runoff, snowmelt or wind action. Unchecked erosion in areas of high or sudden rainfall can contribute to earth movement and landslides that pose hazards to nearby homes, businesses and roadways. Vigorously growing grass or groundcover is the best defense against continued erosion, but getting plants to root properly on steeply sloping surfaces can be difficult. When used to cover mulched and seeded landscapes, jute matting holds topsoil and new seeds in place, reducing erosion and increasing germination rates.

Jute works best on small, steep hillsides, but jute can also be used without mulch on flat areas to reduce dust and enhance germination. Apply jute matting in overlapping vertical rows up and down the slope, never horizontally along the contour.

How to Install Jute Matting

Remove any large rocks or other impediments from the slope before you begin. After seeding, completely cover the area with a layer of straw or other organic mulch.

Dig a trench at least eight inches deep and six inches wide at the top of the seeded area.

Begin laying the jute matting by unrolling down the slope. Fold the top end of the matting into the trench and backfill to secure.

If it is necessary to begin another downhill roll to cover the seeded area, make sure the ends overlap by at least three feet.

When starting a second row at the trench, make sure that the ends overlap the first row by at least four inches and continue as above.

After covering the entire area with matting, tamp down the dirt in the trench until it is level with the surface.

Secure the jute with anchor pins or staples placed one foot apart across the top and bottom of the matting and along downhill overlaps. Anchor the sides and horizontal overlaps every five feet. Anchor pins or staples should be at least six inches long. Sandy soils may require longer pins. A mallet may be necessary to drive the pins completely into the ground.

Jute is an organic materials that will slowly degrade, fertilizing the new seedlings while improving soil quality.
